Event description
A cyberattack on Tube caused a massive leak of liquefied natural gas (LNG), which nearly turned into a disaster.
According to the investigation, hackers infiltrated the production management system several weeks ago and examined the operational logic of the equipment. By remotely closing the boil-off gas discharge valve at the LNG storage facility, the attackers triggered a pressure increase, causing one of the tanks to be depressurized. Fortunately, no explosion followed; however, the leak lasted for almost an hour. An alarm was raised in the storage area and the staff were evacuated. Soon State F's environmental and industrial watchdog arrived on the scene.
Preliminary estimates by Tube suggest that its losses have exceeded $3.5 million, factoring in production downtime, fines, and costs of restoring the security systems.
Experts unanimously describe the attack as a perfectly planned operation: the adversaries not only exploited vulnerabilities in the industrial software but also demonstrated a deep understanding of the LNG storage process. Tube has announced that it's urgently enhancing the security of its facilities. Meanwhile, law enforcement is investigating the incident.
