Event description
A shopping mall event in the capital turned tragic: dozens were injured and one person died. The mall’s managing director has been detained for 15 days.
Shortly before the incident, the shopping mall announced a giveaway on social media: any mall visitor making a purchase at any store would get a coupon for a free children’s toy. The larger the bill, the more expensive the gift.
Many residents of the City were thrilled about the news. When the day of the event came, store owners were excited about the unprecedented flow of customers. Everything was going well, right until the fire alarm went off. The elevators stopped, and crowds started to form on the stairs. People panicked as they evacuated the building to the sound of sirens. Many suffered bruises, contusions, and fractures of varying severity.
When the fire alarm was activated, the smoke extraction system worked as intended. However, the technical floors of the shopping mall quickly began to fill with inert gas, pushing the oxygen out of the rooms. One of the staff members couldn’t evacuate and was later found dead; the others suffered mild poisoning.
The mall owner claims that the gaseous fire suppression system was filled with halon and was supposed to be operated manually according to the instructions; but, for unknown reasons, the automation was triggered. The owner also assures that the new automatic fire alarm system that the mall is equipped with was inspected by the technical supervision agency and couldn’t fail. The prosecutor’s office is investigating the incident.
